The Day After…

December 26, 2009

Ah, Boxing Day.  A day of relaxation, of discovering the joys of new gifts, of recovering from the relentless activity of the day before.  For us, the day was spent quietly, peacefully, at rest.  A good thing too, seeing as the Chipmunk – for reasons unknown – was wide awake at 3.30am and greeted me with a cheery “Good morning, Mummy,” before continuing to ask me the time every hour from then until we finally got up around 8am!

However, today has not been simply a day of inactivity and slothful movements from the chair to the kitchen to the bathroom and back again!  Oh no, the laziness was interspersed with the kind of productivity never before seen in this house on Boxing Day!  At least not as far back as I can remember, anyway!  Christmas gifts have been sorted – books, DVDs and CDs are on shelves, toys are in the toy box and art supplies are in their crate.  Thank you letters are written and either posted or delivered by hand.  Of course, we got caught in the torrential downpour whilst out delivering – the sun didn’t make an appearance until after we got back home!  Chipmunk’s gifts have been reduced from two-and-a-bit boxes to less than a box-full still to be sorted.  I flaked out before I could get the last bit done, and couldn’t face going upstairs to clean and make space in the bedroom for them!

Chipmunk has been enjoying examining all of his gifts.  He has always been fascinated by how the body works – when he was four he commandeered one of my university textbooks, to teach himself about anatomy and physiology!  When he was at the hospital for his EEG, he was studying the technicians neurophysiology text-book while she was attaching the discs to his head – she ended up explaining to him how the different bits of the brain work, and how each lead gives them a picture of a different part.  One of his gifts this year was a model of the human body (complete with squishable intestines, no less!) and a book explaining where everything goes.  He loved it!  I’m sure he’ll put my knowledge to shame in no time!

I hope you all had a wonderful and safe Christmas and that you are able to take some time to relax and recharge over this holiday period.
