A Sprinkle of Christmas Magic

December 25, 2009

Today’s the day.  The day when we celebrate the birth of our dear Lord Jesus above all else.  And then we eat too much, drink too much, open the presents we have spent too much money on, and then fall asleep by mid-afternoon!

For me, today has proved to be a wondrous occasion.  Today, for the first time, Chipmunk was like any other excited, happy, wonder-filled child.  Gone was the too-serious-too-soon little man, replaced by this tiny person for whom every corner turned revealed a new delight, rather than another fear.  Usually on Christmas, he opens a couple of presents, and then has had enough before we really get going with the day.  Usually, he is content to sit with his nose in a book, oblivious to the events going on around him.  Usually, when the children in church go up to the front to show off one of their gifts from ‘Santa’, he sits clutching my hand, a look of abject terror on his face that someone might come towards him and make him speak.

Today, he was up first thing, excitedly realising that his previously-empty present sack had been filled with gifts overnight.  Today, he has spent the majority of his time animatedly involved in everything that has been going on – from the Christmas dinner, to watching a movie, to the gift-opening extravaganza!  Today, he ran up to the front of the church, thrilled to be taking part with the other children.  He proudly spoke into the microphone to show off his favourite present – a book on Oceanography.  That the others were all showing off their dolls, light sabres and toy pets was of no consequence to him!  He was included.  He was engaged.  He was happy.

This afternoon, he spent over an hour handing out gifts, and squealing with pure delight at everything he received.  After all the presents had been received, he started taking pictures on his child-proof digital camera.  Then he started running around the house after my Dad, filming all the while and declaring he was “making a Christmas movie, Mummy!”

I don’t know what happened to Chipmunk this morning, but whatever it was I am extraordinarily grateful for it.  Whatever life holds in store for this little boy, whatever challenges he may face, to see him behaving like any other child today has been a total joy.  I think maybe a little sprinkle of Christmas magic came our way today.
